Lose Your Car Keys? Know What Will Happen

Are you in a situation where you are away from home and have lost your car keys? Without a key or a key fob to get into your vehicle, you may feel lost as to what you need to do. Here are the basic steps you should take to get back into your car again with a working key.

Contact a Locksmith

Start by contacting a local automotive locksmith. Let them know the make and model of your car and where it is currently located. You should get an estimate for how much the lockout service will cost, as well as how long it will take for a locksmith to arrive.

Get into the Vehicle

The next step you should take is to try and get into the vehicle. If you have the option, this is an ideal time to use a service that can unlock the doors to your vehicle remotely. All you need to do is give them a call and confirm some basic information about your membership and your doors can be unlocked for you. Even though you don't have car keys on you to start the car, it can give you a safe spot to wait until a locksmith arrives.

If you can't get into your vehicle, consider waiting in a public place that is safe. Try a nearby restaurant or inside a gas station, which is a much safer alternative than waiting outside of your vehicle

Get a Replacement Key

The locksmith can make you a brand new key remotely, even if you do not have an original key to copy. This is done by getting the codes from the vehicle's manufacturer and then manually cutting the key. If the locksmith cannot key the information for the key from the manufacturer, a mold can be made from which a new key can be created.

Get a Replacement Key Fob

You should also be able to get a replacement key fob from the locksmith. As long as you gave them the correct information about the make and model of your car, they should be able to bring the new key fob to you at the time of the service call. The locksmith will also program the new key fob to your vehicle and test that it works before they leave.

In an emergency situation, an auto locksmith can be a real lifesaver to get you back in your vehicle with working keys. Make sure you have a locksmith on your speed dial just in case you need them one day.
